You plugged in the phone cord. You loaded the paper. But is it actually working?
Fax machines are notorious for silent failures. You might think you are ready to receive orders, but your line is dead.
Here is how to run a diagnostic test.
Method 1: The "HP" Test Number (Hit or Miss)
HP operates a toll-free test number: 1-888-HP-FAX-ME (1-888-473-2963).
- Load a single page.
- Dial the number.
- If successful, their server receives your fax and (sometimes) faxes a confirmation page back to you after 5 minutes.
Note: This service is often overloaded and may not reply.
Method 2: The "Self-Loop" (Best for Online Users)
If you use mFax.to, you can test your system instantly.
- Log in to your dashboard.
- Click Send Fax.
- Enter your own fax number (the one assigned to your account).
- Attach a dummy PDF.
- Send.
If you receive the fax in your inbox a minute later, you know both your Sending and Receiving functions are perfect.
Troubleshooting Common Errors
Error: "No Dial Tone"
Check the wall jack. Plug a regular phone into it. Do you hear a tone? If not, your landline is dead.
Error: "Comm Error"
This usually happens on VoIP lines (digital phone lines). They compress the audio, garbling the fax signal. Switch to an online fax service like mFax.to to fix this permanently.
