How to fax without a fax machine
The machine at the other end is real. The one at your end does not have to exist.

Yes — email to fax is an mFax Business feature. On the personal plan you send from the composer instead.
Attach the document to an ordinary email addressed to the recipient's fax number: a fax to 415-555-0123 goes to 14155550123@send.mfax.to. The address you log in with is authorized automatically, and the status comes back by email.
A public fax machine is probably within a short drive. They charge by the page, and the first page usually costs the most.

How to receive a fax online
Sending only needs the other machine's number. Anything coming back to you has to land on a number of your own.

Incoming faxes are saved as PDFs next to the ones you sent, and the apps push a notification the moment one lands.

Is mFax really free?
Your first 7 days are free, and nothing is held back during them — the same 60 pages per fax, the same file types, the same delivery confirmation a paying account gets. After that it is $7.99/mo. If you only needed one fax, cancel as soon as it is delivered and that is the end of it.
What is the best genuinely free fax service?
For two or three pages to a US or Canadian number, FaxZero and GotFreeFax are the honest answers — free with no trial at all, paid for by printing their own branding on your cover page. FAX.PLUS gives you 10 pages. mFax is the better answer when the document is longer, when it is going abroad, or when you need to prove it arrived.
How many pages can I fax for free?
Up to 60 pages in a single fax, and up to 50 faxes a day during the free week. That matters more than it sounds: FaxZero stops at 3 pages and 5 faxes a day, GotFreeFax at 2–3 pages, and FAX.PLUS hands you 10 pages before asking for a plan. A tax return or a medical record is usually longer than that on its own.
Can I send a fax without signing up?
The composer opens with no sign-up form and no password — you land straight on the send screen and a guest account is created for you in the background. An email and card details come when you start the free week, which is also when the fax goes out.
Do I need a fax machine or a phone line?
Neither. mFax dials the receiving machine over the internet, so all you need is the device you are reading this on — no fax machine, no phone line or wall jack, no modem, no printer driver, no toner and no paper. The two sides agree on speed, page size and error correction before a single line moves, and the machine at the other end hears the same tones on the same line it always has.
Can I send a free fax from my iPhone or Android phone?
Yes — it is the most common way people use it. Install the app from the App Store or Google Play, or just open mFax in your phone browser. The camera scanner turns a page on the table into a fax-ready PDF.
Will there be ads or a watermark on my fax?
Not on your document pages — nothing of ours is printed on them. The cover sheet, if you add one, carries a small grey line in its footer that says "sent with mfax.to". That is a different thing from the branding free fax services print across the top of the cover page that lands on the recipient's desk, which is how they pay for being free.
How do I know the fax arrived?
The terminal in the other building acknowledges the transmission when your pages are through. That acknowledgement is what you get back — on the row in your history, and as a PDF receipt you can keep. When it does not go through, the row says which of the ordinary reasons it was.
Can I receive a fax too?
Yes, with a fax number of your own. Add one during the free week — country, then state or province, then the number — and it is live immediately. Receiving numbers are available in the United States and Canada. Faxes arrive as PDFs and as push notifications on the phone apps. An existing number can be ported on a Business workspace.
Can I fax another country?
Yes. Enter the number with its country code — +44 for the UK, for example — and send it the way you would a domestic fax. International faxes count triple towards the limits that keep the network clean, so send them a few at a time. If a destination is not enabled, the fax comes back as "Destination not supported" rather than silently failing.
What happens after the free week?
The plan becomes $7.99/mo unless you cancel first. Cancelling switches off auto-renewal — it does not cut the time you already have — and where you subscribed is where you cancel: on the website, in Settings › Plan; in the iOS or Android app, in your phone's subscription settings.
