Mobile Scanner Apps: Scan & Fax From Your Phone (2026)

A mobile scanner app turns your phone's camera into a document scanner, and the free ones built into iPhone and Android handle most paperwork. Here are 8 worth installing in 2026, which of them can send a fax, and how to scan and fax a page from your phone.

Mobile Scanner Apps: Scan & Fax From Your Phone (2026)

Quick answer: The best mobile scanner for most people is already on their phone: Notes or Files on an iPhone and Google Drive on Android scan paper for free, and Adobe Scan is the free pick for searchable PDFs. If the page has to go out as a fax, mFax scans it with your camera and faxes it from the same app. You can send it free for 7 days.

A mobile scanner is either an app that turns your phone's camera into a document scanner or a pocket-size hardware scanner you carry in a bag. Search for one and Google mixes the two, along with warehouse barcode guns. This guide is about the app kind, because the phone you already own handles most paperwork: a tax form, a signed lease, a doctor's referral, a stack of receipts.

Scanning is only half the job, though. The forms people scan on a phone are often the ones that have to be faxed, to a doctor's office, an insurer or a government agency. So next to each mobile scanner app below you will find whether it can send a fax, and what that costs. Prices and features come from each app's own store listing and help pages, read on October 26, 2026. Nothing here is a lab test; it is what each developer publishes.

The Best Mobile Scanner Apps at a Glance

Eight mobile scanner apps cover almost every need: two free scanners you probably already have, four free downloads with paid upgrades, one app you buy once, and one fax app with a scanner inside.

Among the pure scanner apps, only Scanner Pro and CamScanner send a fax themselves, and both charge for each one. mFax works the other way round: it is a fax service with a scanner built in.

Mobile Scanner Apps Compared: The 8 Worth Installing

These eight were picked from what their developers publish: features, prices and limits on their own store listings and help pages. They are ordered by the job each does best, starting with the one that faxes.

1. mFax: Best for Scanning Straight to a Fax

mFax is a fax app with a mobile scanner built in, so the page you photograph is the page that gets faxed. In the iPhone, iPad and Android apps, the scanner finds the edges, straightens the page and crops it. A photo taken on a kitchen table comes out straight and white, as a fax-ready PDF.

Then it does what most scanner apps can't. It dials the fax number, sends the pages and marks the fax Delivered once the receiving machine confirms every page, with a PDF receipt you can download. When a fax fails, the row says why (Recipient busy, No fax tone, Declined) instead of leaving you guessing.

  • Scanner: camera scanning with edge detection and auto-crop in the iPhone, iPad and Android apps.
  • Files you already have: PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and images such as JPG, PNG or HEIC become fax pages automatically, so a scan from any app on this list can be faxed too. One fax carries up to 60 pages and 100 MB.
  • Sign before you send: Edit page has Draw, Text and Sign tools, so there is no print, sign and scan loop.
  • A fax number of your own: every plan includes a US or Canadian number for receiving faxes.
  • Every screen: the same account works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, Apple-silicon Macs and in a browser. The camera scanner is in the phone and tablet apps.
  • Store ratings: 4.7 on the App Store and on Google Play.

Keep in mind: faxing needs a subscription once the free week ends. If you only need one fax, cancel right after it shows Delivered. Already happy with another scanner app? Keep it: mFax faxes whatever PDF it makes.

Get mFax on the App Store or Google Play, or open it in your browser and send your first fax free for 7 days.

2. Apple Notes and Files: Best Free Scanner on iPhone

Every iPhone and iPad already has a mobile scanner: the Scan Documents option in the Notes and Files apps. It costs nothing and is already installed.

In Notes, open a note, tap the attachment button and choose Scan Documents. In Auto mode the phone captures the page as soon as it is in view. You can also tap the shutter or press a volume button, then drag the corners to fit the page and tap Keep Scan. On iOS 26 you can set the flash and an image filter before you shoot, according to Apple's instructions. The Files app has the same scanner behind its More button and saves the result to a folder you choose.

  • Good at: fast, free scans, and you can sign a scan in Notes with Markup, then Add › Signature.
  • Missing: a fax option. To fax the scan, share it to a fax app.

3. Google Drive: Best Free Scanner on Android

On Android the free scanner lives in Google Drive. Open the app, tap Camera in the bottom-right corner and point it at the page. A blue line shows the crop area, and you can switch between Auto and Manual capture.

Before saving you can Crop & Rotate, apply a Filter (grayscale included), Clean away stains and finger marks, or Add more pages. Then save the scan as a PDF or JPG to any Drive folder, as Google's help page describes. Google calls the result a searchable PDF.

  • Good at: free scans that land straight in Drive, where you can find them by their text.
  • Missing: a fax option. The scan is saved to Drive, and from there you can attach it to a fax.

4. Adobe Scan: Best Free App for Searchable PDFs

Adobe Scan is free to download on iPhone and Android, and its headline feature is free too. Its OCR (optical character recognition) turns a scan into a searchable, editable PDF. Adobe's Adobe Scan page also promises automatic boundary detection and removal of glare and shadows.

  • Good at: clean PDFs with real text in them, handy for contracts and long letters you will search later.
  • Costs extra: combining files, converting to other formats and password-protecting PDFs need Adobe Acrobat Pro, and the app sells its own paid plans as well.
  • Missing: fax. Neither Adobe's page nor the app's listing mentions one; our page on faxing from Adobe covers the workarounds.

5. Genius Scan: Best Free Scanner App to Download

Genius Scan, by The Grizzly Labs, runs on iPhone and Android, and its Basic plan is, in the developer's own words, "Free (yes, really)" (Genius Scan pricing). According to its App Store listing, the free app detects the document, removes the background, offers filters including black and white, batch-scans multi-page PDFs and processes documents on the device.

  • Good at: a capable free scanner that processes your pages on the phone itself.
  • Costs extra: Ultra, at $39.99 a year, adds OCR, export to cloud services, backups and sync across devices.
  • Missing: fax inside the scanner. The same developer sells it as a separate app, Genius Fax; we cover it in our Genius Fax review.

6. Scanner Pro: Best iPhone Scanner With Pay-Per-Fax

Scanner Pro, from Readdle, is an iPhone and iPad scanner with automatic edge detection and perspective correction, built-in OCR and signing. It is one of the few scanner apps that faxes. Its listing says "You can also fax documents directly from your device," and Readdle explains that the price of a fax, a Fax Unit Pack, "is calculated automatically based on the country of the recipient and the quantity of fax pages" (Readdle support). The faxes go out through PamFax.

  • Good at: sending the occasional fax without a separate fax subscription.
  • Costs extra: Scanner Pro Plus is sold in the app, and every fax is its own in-app purchase.
  • Keep in mind: it is made for iPhone and iPad. Readdle's fax help covers sending only, with no mention of a number for receiving faxes.

7. CamScanner: The Most Extra Tools, With Ads Unless You Pay

CamScanner is the feature-heavy option, on iPhone, Android and the web. Its App Store listing promises text recognition (OCR) and scans saved as PDF, JPG or TXT, with plenty of editing tools on top. CamScanner's own FAQ is clear about the trade-off. The free version includes "basic scanning, saving, sharing, and uploading, plus limited OCR uses," and Premium removes "ads and watermarks" (CamScanner).

  • Good at: the longest feature list here.
  • Costs extra: a Premium Account is listed at $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year on the US App Store.
  • Fax: yes, pay as you go. The App Store listing sells a "One-page Fax" in-app purchase for $0.99.

8. TurboScan Pro: Best One-Time Purchase

TurboScan Pro, from Piksoft, costs $12.99 once on the App Store, and its listing says "One-time purchase. No subscriptions." It detects the page, corrects perspective, removes shadows and sets the contrast for black-on-white text. Its SureScan mode takes three pictures of the same page for a sharper result.

Piksoft says it collects no data from TurboScan and that all scanning happens on your iPhone. A free version, TurboScan, is on the App Store as well, and TurboScan Pro is also on Google Play.

  • Good at: no subscription, and a black-on-white look that suits a fax.
  • Missing: fax inside the app. Piksoft sells it separately, as Fax with TurboFax.

Microsoft Lens is gone

Plenty of "best scanner app" lists still recommend Microsoft Lens. Microsoft retired it: the app left the App Store and Google Play on February 9, 2026, and it stopped scanning on March 9, 2026 (Microsoft's retirement notice). Microsoft points former users to the OneDrive app (tap +, then Scan photo), which saves scans to OneDrive rather than to the phone.

How to Scan a Document With Your Phone

To scan with a mobile phone, open a scanner, hold the phone flat over the page in good light, let it capture the page, adjust the corners and save. Here is the exact path on each phone, using the free scanner that is already there.

On an iPhone or iPad (Notes)

  1. Open Notes, then open or create a note.
  2. Tap the attachment button, then Scan Documents.
  3. Hold the page in view. In Auto mode it scans by itself; otherwise tap the shutter or press a volume button.
  4. Drag the corners to fit the page, then tap Keep Scan.
  5. Scan more pages, or tap Done.

Prefer a file in a folder? In Files, tap the More button and choose Scan Documents. After Done, pick a location and tap Save. For the full walkthrough, including faxing the result, see our guide on how to scan and fax from an iPhone.

On Android (Google Drive)

  1. Open Google Drive and tap Camera at the bottom right.
  2. Line the page up inside the blue outline, then capture it in Auto or Manual mode.
  3. Tidy it with Crop & Rotate, Filter or Clean, and tap Add for more pages.
  4. Tap Done, name the file and choose .pdf.
  5. Pick a Location and tap Save.

How to Scan and Fax From Your Phone With mFax

With mFax you scan and fax in the same app, so there is no exporting files or emailing PDFs to yourself. This is the app's own send flow:

1

Start a new fax

Open mFax on your iPhone, iPad or Android phone and choose New Fax. If the page is already a PDF, you can also start in your browser.

2

Enter the fax number

Type the recipient's fax number with its country code: +1 for the US and Canada.

3

Scan or attach the pages

Photograph the paper with the app's scanner, which finds the edges, straightens the page and crops it into a fax-ready PDF. Already scanned it in another app? Attach that PDF or photo instead. If it needs a signature, open the page with Edit page and use Sign.

4

Send and keep the receipt

Check the page count and the estimated time, then press Send. In Sent, the fax stays In Progress while the pages go through, at around 40 seconds a page, and turns Delivered when the receiving machine confirms every page. Download receipt gives you a PDF.

Scan and send your first fax free: the 7-day trial covers up to 60 pages a fax. Faxing a picture rather than a document? See how to fax a photo.

Tips for Scans That Fax Cleanly

A scan that looks fine on screen can fax badly, because fax is black and white at a fixed resolution: anything faint in the original comes out fainter on paper. Most of these tips come from mFax's own support answers.

  • Use good light and hold the phone flat above the page, so the camera doesn't capture a slanted, shadowed sheet.
  • Choose a black-and-white or grayscale filter if your scanner has one. Color is lost in a fax anyway.
  • Dark text on white faxes best. Light gray text, thin fonts and colored or patterned paper fade.
  • Keep pages at Letter or A4 size so nothing is scaled down.
  • Sign on the scan, not on paper: use Edit page › Sign in mFax, or our free PDF editor in the browser.
  • Stay under the limit: one fax in mFax carries up to 60 pages and 100 MB.

Did the fax still come out fuzzy? Our guide on why a fax is blurry walks through the fixes.

Mobile Scanner App or Portable Document Scanner: Which Do You Need?

A mobile scanner app is enough for most people. A portable document scanner earns its place only if you scan stacks of paper every week. Devices such as Epson's mobile document scanners and Brother's portable scanners feed each page through the scanner instead of photographing it. Epson says its lineup "includes wireless, battery-operated and ADF models," and duplex models such as Brother's DS-740D scan both sides of a page in one pass.

Send Your Scan as a Fax

Any recent phone makes a good mobile scanner, and the free scanners in Notes on iPhone and Google Drive on Android handle most paperwork. Pick Adobe Scan for searchable text, Genius Scan for a capable free scanner, or TurboScan Pro if you would rather pay once.

When the paper is headed for a fax machine, skip the trip to a store. Get mFax on the App Store or Google Play, scan the page, type the number and send it free for 7 days. Rather use a browser? Open mFax there and attach the PDF your scanner app made. Every other route, from email to fax apps, is in our guide to faxing from your phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best mobile scanner?
For most people it is the phone already in their pocket: the scanner in Notes or Files on an iPhone and in Google Drive on Android costs nothing. Adobe Scan adds free text recognition, and when the page has to go out as a fax, mFax scans and faxes in one app. A portable sheet-fed scanner only pays off for regular stacks of paper.
Can your phone be used as a scanner?
Yes. On an iPhone or iPad, open Notes, tap the attachment button and choose Scan Documents; the Files app has the same option. On Android, open Google Drive and tap Camera. Both outline the page for you and let you adjust the corners before you save.
Is a mobile scanner app free?
Scanning is free with the scanners built into iPhone and Google Drive, and Adobe Scan, Genius Scan and CamScanner are free to download, with paid plans for extras. Faxing the scan is what costs money: a per-fax purchase in Scanner Pro or CamScanner, or a fax app. With mFax you can send a fax free for 7 days.
How do you scan with a mobile phone?
Open a scanner (Notes or Files on iPhone, Google Drive on Android, or a scanner app), hold the phone flat above the page in good light and let it capture the page. Adjust the corners, add more pages if you need them, and save the scan as a PDF. Our guide to scanning and faxing from an iPhone walks through every step.
Can I fax a document I scanned with my phone?
Yes. Attach the scan, a PDF or a photo, to a new fax in a fax app, or scan the page inside the fax app itself. In mFax you enter the number and press Send, and the fax shows Delivered once the receiving machine confirms every page.
