Quick answer: Documo is a HIPAA-compliant cloud fax and healthcare document automation platform — the company that spent a decade trading as mFax before retiring that name in 2025. Plans start at $25/month billed annually, a signed BAA is included on every tier, and there is a 14-day free trial with no card required. It is excellent if you are a clinic pushing referrals into an EHR, and expensive if you just need to send faxes.

If you searched Documo and landed on a company talking about referral intake, intelligent document processing and Direct Secure Messaging, you have not made a mistake. Documo really is a fax provider — it is just no longer only a fax provider, and it is no longer called what it used to be called.

This review covers what Documo costs in 2026, what the platform actually does, where it is genuinely strong, where it is weak, and which alternatives are worth a look before you commit to an annual contract. It also clears up the single most confusing thing about this product: the mFax name, and the fact that mFax.to is a completely different company.

What Is Documo?

Documo is a healthcare document automation platform whose core product is HIPAA-compliant cloud fax. The company was founded in 2014 in Wilmington, Delaware, and public funding databases put its total raise at roughly $29M across three rounds, from Arthur Ventures and Radian Capital.

Its homepage headline in 2026 is "Automate The Healthcare Document Work That Slows Care" — which tells you exactly where the product's center of gravity sits. Faxing is the entry point; the money is in what happens to the document after it arrives.

The platform is organized into six modules:

• Cloud Fax — send and receive faxes from a browser, email, print driver, an analog fax-machine connector, or the API
• Cloud Fax API — REST API with key-based auth and a sandbox environment
• Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) — AI classification and data extraction from inbound documents
• Electronic Signatures — request and collect signatures inside the document workflow
• Workflow Automation — routing, patient matching, delivery into downstream systems
• Integrations — EHR/EMR connections, direct or via the API

Documo also launched Direct Secure Messaging (DSM) — encrypted, standards-based messaging between healthcare providers — which is the sort of thing that only makes sense if your customers are clinics. They are.

Documo Was mFax — Here's What Changed

Documo launched in 2014 as mFax, and ran three separately branded products: mFax (cloud fax), mSign (e-signatures) and mDrive (cloud storage). In 2025 all three were folded into a single brand.

Documo's own explanation is refreshingly blunt: "Everything you rely on stays the same — we just outgrew the name." Its rebrand page adds that over the years the company "added eSignatures, cloud storage, EHR integrations, a developer API, a proprietary delivery network, and AI-powered document processing. The name 'Fax' no longer told the full story."

Practically, for an existing customer the rebrand was cosmetic — same platform, same accounts. For everyone else it left a decade of stale search results, review-site profiles still filed under "mFax", and a genuine identity problem we cover further down.

Where to Log In to Documo

Documo customers sign in at app.documo.com. That is the only login that reaches a Documo account. If you are hunting for "mFax login" because that is the name on an old invoice, it is the same door — the brand changed, the platform did not.

Documo Pricing in 2026

Documo publishes four tiers. Three have list prices; the fourth is a sales conversation.

Extra users and extra fax numbers are $3.00 each per month on every published tier. Annual billing on Business saves $240/year; on Enterprise it saves $720/year.

List prices flatter Documo. Divide by the included page allowance and the picture sharpens:

Two things fall out of that table.

First, Documo only becomes price-competitive at volume. You have to reach the $240/month tier before a page costs four cents — and four cents is roughly what a mid-market provider charges at any volume.

Second, the overage rates are punitive at the bottom. A Solo customer who sends 400 pages in a busy month pays $25 plus 100 × $0.15 = $40, which is a 60% jump for a 33% overshoot. Small practices with lumpy volume should budget a tier above their average.

Is There a Documo Free Trial?

Documo Features: What You Actually Get

Sending and Receiving

Documo covers more input methods than most cloud fax services:

• Browser — upload and compose in the web app
• Email to fax — send a fax by emailing it
• Print driver — print-to-fax from any desktop application
• Fax machine connector — bridge an existing analog machine onto the platform
• API — programmatic send and receive

That analog connector is an unusual and genuinely useful feature: a clinic with a physical machine staff refuse to give up can keep it, while the traffic moves to the cloud. Very few competitors offer it.

The gap is mobile. Documo ships an iOS app and no Android app at all. We looked up the iOS listing directly on 2026-09-16: it sits at 3.7 stars from 9 ratings, on version 1.1.2, last updated 29 April 2026. Nine ratings after four years on the store is not a thriving mobile product — it is a checkbox.

The Documo API

API access is included on Business and Enterprise plans, and is a paid add-on on Solo. Documo publishes a REST API with API-key authentication, a sandbox environment for testing, and code samples in cURL, Node.js, Python, PHP and Ruby.

Security and HIPAA Compliance

This is Documo's strongest suit and it is not close. The published posture:

• SOC 2 Type II (AICPA), with HITRUST e1 certification stated as in progress
• AES-256 at rest, on NIST FIPS 140-2 validated modules
• TLS 1.2 minimum in transit, with TLS 1.0 and 1.1 disabled
• Signed BAA included on every plan at no extra cost
• PIPEDA compliance for Canadian data
• Self-reported 99.9% uptime and 99.8% deliverability

The BAA-on-every-plan policy is the detail worth copying down. Remember that a BAA is a contract, not a certificate: under the HHS Business Associate guidance, compliance depends on how you configure and use the service as much as on what the vendor signs.

The uptime and delivery figures are Documo's own numbers. We could not independently verify them, and no fax provider publishes an audited delivery rate — treat all such figures across the industry as marketing until a vendor shows you the methodology.

Documo scores well on the review platforms. Capterra shows 4.8/5 from 86 reviews with 99% positive sentiment, and sub-scores of 4.8 for ease of use, 4.8 for customer service, 4.8 for features and 4.7 for value for money. G2 carries a 4.8 rating that Documo cites on its own homepage.

The praise is consistent and specific:

• Support is the standout. Reviewers describe it as fast and genuinely helpful — the most repeated positive across every platform
• Clean, low-training-overhead interface
• Reliable delivery with little downtime
• Solid EHR and practice-management integrations

The criticism is consistent too, and it clusters:

• Delivery confirmations are sometimes unreliable — the single most damaging complaint for a fax product
• Cover pages are cumbersome to customize

Is Documo the Same as mFax.to?

No. Documo and mFax.to are two unrelated companies, and this is the most common point of confusion in the whole category.

Here is the tangle, plainly:

• Documo traded as mFax from 2014 until 2025, then retired the name. Its customers sign in at app.documo.com
• mFax.to is a separate faxing product operated by Octagon Lab. Its customers sign in at app.mfax.to
• Neither company's credentials work on the other's site. There is no shared account, no migration path, and no corporate relationship between them

The confusion has real consequences. Because Documo's mobile coverage stops at iOS, Android users searching for "Documo for Android" are routinely pointed at unrelated apps — including ours. • You want AI classification and extraction on inbound documents, not just a PDF in an inbox
• You need to keep an analog fax machine in service while moving to the cloud
• Compliance review is a gate, and SOC 2 Type II plus a no-questions BAA clears it quickly

Look elsewhere if:

• You are one person or a small office that needs a fax number and a BAA, full stop — $300 a year up front buys far more elsewhere
• Anyone on the team faxes from Android
• Your volume is under a few hundred pages a month and lumpy, so overage rates dominate the bill
• You want the API without paying $80/month for a ten-seat plan to unlock it
• You want to try monthly before committing to a year

The Bottom Line

Documo is a genuinely good cloud fax platform that has decided it would rather be a healthcare document automation company. The security posture is excellent, the BAA policy is more generous than most of the category, and support is the thing its customers praise loudest.

But the product has moved upmarket and its pricing followed. A $300 annual commitment, a $0.15 overage rate and no Android app add up to a poor deal for the solo practice — which is, awkwardly, the buyer most likely to be searching "Documo" in the first place.

Pick Documo when faxes are the front door to a clinical workflow. Pick something cheaper when a fax is just a fax.
